The area saw military activity since the first decade of the twentieth century, as Barrow was developing as a centre for the manufacture of naval armaments. The defences were expanded and upgraded during the Second World War, with a renewed focus on anti-aircraft provision alongside the continued defence of the sea-lanes into the port of Barrow.
