In 1967 local fisherman Charlie Overett from Heysham was in his early 20s. With his expert knowledge of the Bay, he had the nerve-racking task of piloting Commander Charles Gerald Forsberg during the Cross Bay Swim from Fleetwood to Morecambe. Ten years earlier Forsberg had broken the England France cross-Channel record in 30 hours 33 minutes. During the event, Charlie sailed his fishing boat, guiding local fisherman Ray Edmonson’s rowing boat, with Commander Forsberg swimming behind. Forsberg wrote him a letter of thanks after the event.
