Around Warton Crag - Railway Views - Image 02 - Carnforth freight in 1971
“Around Warton Crag – Railway Views” is another series of photographs celebrating Warton Crag, but the focus is the view of the Crag from the Railways passing nearby. This photo was taken nearly 50 years ago in 1971, when freight traffic was still busy and 4-wheel short-wheelbase wagons were the norm. This train is taking the route out of Carnforth yards towards Barrow. But this photo also illustrates 2 facts about Warton Crag ……….first, the summit appears considerably less wooded than nowadays, and second, Warton Crag is so much a part of the scenery that its prominence appears in many photos of the area even if that was not the purpose of the photo ! In this case it was a mere 47 years after this view was taken that the photographer realised Warton Crag itself had been captured too !
